StartUp Tip #85: Waking up a sleeping bear

sleeping-bear

TVs get into sleep mode and hibernate.

Laptops and computers get into sleep into sleep mode and hibernate.

Lights in certain buildings get into sleep mode and hibernate.

It turns out that humans beings also get into sleep mode, but not only at night also during broad day light.

People hibernate too.

Waking up a sleeping bear is difficult.

But it turns out that once activated, people do far more in a short time than you might expect.

And so, the week before Christmas sees an insane amount of shopping.

The weeks before a big election see a significant amount of campaigning and attention paid.

The week before exams sees a high number of students in the library.

The final days leading up to TEDxGaborone gets people into action to buy tickets.

If you wait until a marketer tells you it is time to get out of your comfort zone, you have just handed over your freedom and agency to someone who might not care about the things you care about.

Far more powerful would be to develop the power to get out of our hibernation, on our own timetable, on a regular basis.

If you wait until there is another reminder, siren, or case study in your industry, you will be too late.

It is no one’s day but yours.
