I’m the least qualified to write about the legacy of Mama Winnie Madikizela Mandela.

In a world where courage in the face of injustice is in limited supply, Mama Winnie stood steadfast against an oppressive apartheid system.

You taught us that bravery is a choice.

You taught us to be fierce and strong in standing up against injustice.

You were strong when we couldn’t be.

You held the fort when it would have been easy to give up.

You outspoken in the face of injustice.

You were a rage that sometimes burned too brightly and you showed us how to be brave and be our fearless best.

You were a lion, a warrior, a mother, a legend.

You mattered.

You did work that mattered.
